Why it matters

What Is Backflow and Why Is It Dangerous?

Backflow is the reversed flow of water from its intended direction. When water pressure changes unexpectedly, contaminated water can flow backward into your potable (drinking) water supply. This is called a cross-connection — any physical link between a clean water source and a potential source of contamination.

Irrigation systems are one of the most common residential cross-connections. Fertilizers, pesticides, and soil bacteria sitting in your sprinkler lines can be pulled back into your drinking water if backflow occurs.

Back-siphonage occurs when a sudden drop in water pressure creates a vacuum that pulls contaminated water into the clean supply — caused by water main breaks, high firefighting demand, or undersized piping.

Worth knowing

Backpressure occurs when downstream pressure exceeds the supply pressure, pushing contaminated water backward into the potable system. Booster pumps, elevated piping, boilers, and irrigation systems with pumps can all create backpressure conditions.

Both scenarios are preventable with a properly installed and tested backflow prevention device.

Installation

Every irrigation system needs a backflow device installed inline on the water supply. We match the right device to your property’s hazard classification and your municipality’s requirements, then test and register it.

Annual Testing

Most municipalities require annual testing by an OWWA-certified tester. We connect a calibrated gauge, check every valve, email your results, and file a copy with your municipality.

Repair

Seats, springs, and check valves wear over time. When a device fails its test, we diagnose and repair on-site whenever possible, then re-test — Ontario requires it before results can be filed.

It depends on where your device is located.

PVB — outdoor deviceNo. As long as your irrigation water is turned on, we can test it.
DCVA — basement deviceYes. We need access to your basement.
RP — commercial siteYes. Please provide access to the device location.
Choosing a device

Types of Backflow Prevention Devices

We help property owners choose a suitable testable device for their irrigation system — PVB, DCVA, or RP — based on hazard level and where the device will sit.

PVB — Pressure Vacuum Breaker

A single-body device with one check valve and an air inlet. Installed outdoors, above your highest sprinkler head.

  • Protects against back-siphonage only (not backpressure)
  • Installed at least 12 inches above the highest sprinkler head
  • Common in residential irrigation systems

DCVA — Double Check Valve Assembly

Two check valves in series, two shut-off valves, four test cocks. Installed in your basement, inline on the water supply line.

  • Protects against both backpressure and back-siphonage
  • Used for moderate-hazard applications
  • Most common device for residential irrigation

RP — Reduced Pressure Principle Assembly

The highest level of protection available. Two independent check valves plus a relief valve — if both checks fail, the relief valve discharges water rather than letting contamination through.

  • Protects against both backpressure and back-siphonage
  • Required for severe-hazard applications
  • Standard for commercial and institutional sites

Ontario Backflow Prevention Requirements

A testable backflow device is mandatory for irrigation systems in Ontario. Here’s who needs one and what your tester must hold.

Who needs a device?

You likely need one if your property has any of:

  • An irrigation or sprinkler system
  • A pool or hot tub with a direct water connection
  • A booster pump or fire sprinkler system
  • Solar heating tied to the water supply
  • Chemical injection or any auxiliary water source

Municipal requirements

Many cities have annual testing procedures in place. Blue Jay recommends confirming the current requirements with your municipality and using a certified backflow tester through the OWWA.

Certified tester requirements

Ontario municipalities require testers to hold:

  • Current OWWA certification (5 yrs) or ASSE (3 yrs)
  • Municipal registration where required
  • Appropriate test equipment, trade certification, and insurance

What is backflow?
Backflow is the reversed flow of water from its intended direction. When it happens, non-potable water from irrigation lines, pools, or other sources can mix back into your drinking water supply — undetected.
What causes backflow?
Two things: back-siphonage (a drop in supply pressure pulls contaminated water backward) and backpressure (downstream pressure exceeds supply pressure, pushing contaminated water back).
How often does backflow testing need to be done?
Many cities have annual testing procedures in place. Confirm the current deadline with your municipality.
Do I need to be home for the test?
PVBs are typically outdoors, so no. DCVAs are usually in the basement, so yes. RP devices on commercial sites require access to the device location.
Is backflow testing included in my spring start-up?
No. During start-up we perform a visual inspection. The annual backflow test is a separate procedure using calibrated testing equipment, with results submitted to your municipality.
What happens if I don’t get my backflow device tested?
Annual backflow testing is the property owner’s responsibility. Your municipality can provide local requirements and deadlines.
What’s the difference between a backflow preventer and a backwater valve?
A backflow preventer protects your drinking water from contamination. A backwater valve prevents sewage from backing up into your home through the drain system. Different systems, different purposes.
Does my municipality require a backflow prevention device?
If you have an irrigation system, swimming pool, booster pump, or any other cross-connection to the municipal water supply — yes.
