John Van Patter from New York State was the first settler of the land that is now known as Aylmer. In the 1830s, lots were sold and a general store was built - which gave way to what the town evolved into today.
Surprisingly, Aylmer, Ontario was formerly known as Troy. It was renamed in 1835 after Lord Aylmer, the Governor-in-Chief of British North America. The town originally experienced quick growth. Sawmills and flour mills were built. Agriculture and timber industries took over. And the construction of the Great Canadian Railway created jobs and connections to other cities and towns.
